Career change dog yellow Lab Lourdes with her adopter, Elaine Zilonka and Ruby, a black lab/greyhound mix, on the hiking trail. Lourdes was the fourth of five female yellow labs raised by Bob and Joan Fricke of Gold Country Guides in Placer County, CA. She was adopted four years ago by Elaine, the Fitness Director at Sun City Roseville. She was to be a companion for Ruby, rescued seven years ago from the Sacramento SPCA. Bob writes: "Ruby assumes the Alpha position in the home, which Lourdes accepts - and they get along fine. Elaine has introduced Lourdes to the outdoors including: jogging (up to 15 miles every week), hiking, and backpacking on the weekends. The dogs both have their own backpacks and sleep in a "pup" tent (of course) with Elaine. Elaine also exposed Lourdes to lakes and streams, taught her to swim, retrieve sticks, balls and frisbees (her favorite). Lourdes also entertains herself (and others) by blowing bubbles in the water. Needless to say, Lourdes has a new and wonderful life and looks forward to Elaine's return home from work each day by laying on the sofa and gazing out the window (her favorite spot)."

Friends for life: Sierra, Jessica and Marissa

Friends for life: Sierra, Jessica and Marissa. As you may be aware, GDB's puppy raising program provides more than just excellent socialization for our pups - it fosters lifelong friendships between puppy raisers as well. We recently heard from Marissa Pounds, who tells this story about she and her sister, Sierra, meeting one of their best friends, fellow puppy raiser Jessica Harpel: "My sister and I met Jessica at our very first puppy club meeting. She had just gotten her first puppy in training, Dakota, a yellow lab male. At first, we didn't get along. We stayed away from each other until Dakota was assigned to come to our house so we could puppy-sit. It was then that we finally talked with Jessica and learned we had lots in common. Not two days later did we plan a sleep-over. Jessica was there when we got our puppy, Jaunty, a black lab female. We went to Puppy Fun Day together, and do gymnastics together. Although my sister and I have known Jessica for only a year, I know when we are old, we will be talking about those two Guide Dog puppies that we raised a long time ago and our adventures with them."

The pups were able to visit the fire trucks, walk through the back of an ambulance, sniff the fire fighting clothing and equipment, and listen to the sirens.

During October, our email inbox (information@guidedogs.com) was overflowing with amazing photo submissions (which we posted to our Flickr site), as was our Group Photo Pool (www.flickr.com/groups/guidedogsfortheblind). Here's a sampling of the great images that we received. We hope you keep those photos and stories coming!

Emily and Leche
The Have Paws Will Travel puppy raising club of Arapahoe County, Colo., had it's 17th annual Halloween Party, Chili Dinner and Costume Contest in October. The costumes puppy raisers came up with for their dogs were clever and impressive! Pictured is Emily Groves with yellow Lab puppy Leche; their costumes won them First Place in the "Team" category (they were cookies and milk). You can enjoy many many more fun pictures at the club's website, hpwtdogmom.org. Submitted by Andrea Loughry.

German Shepherd career change dog, Kenzie.
German Shepherd career change dog, Kenzie. Submitted by Maureen Picarella who writes: "Kenzie was born in November of 1994. Our family adopted her approximately 2 years later. At the ripe old age of 15, Kenzie has been part of our family of four for more than 13 years of her life. She has outlived her yellow Lab buddy, Bailey, and accepted and learned to live with four new cats over the years. Her newest Lab buddy, Rocky, keeps her young. She has raised 2 boys from adolescence to adulthood, and still loves sleeping with them to this day. While most of her days are spent sleeping in a sunny spot of the house and waiting for her next meal, Kenzie still adores the neighborhood walks with my husband and I (although, a bit shorter now, due to her restricted mobility). As to be expected of a large dog her age, Kenzie has had some health challenges… we marvel at her resilience and count every day she is with us as a blessing."

German Shepherd guide Michener
German Shepherd guide Michener, caught sleeping on the job. Michener is the guide of Dudley Hanks, who writes: "Most people think that the life of a guide dog is all work and no play, with little or no time for rest. While they do work hard, guides also have a lot of down time, as they laze around while their handler is busy with other things. Thus, one of the things guides have to be good at doing is, er, nothing. Here is a shot of Mich sleeping on the job. I was busy having coffee. He took the opportunity to catch a few Z's, and I couldn't resist snapping a shot of him lying there so peacefully."

He is pictured at the SPCA's recent "Bark & Whine Ball" where he was honored. Photo submitted by Georgianne Meade, who writes: "We had a great time at the Ball. There was a band and great food. They had an 8' x 4' banner of Freeman hanging on the wall. He got so much attention that he was exhausted when he got home. There were 600 people and 300 dogs. Every dog was just so well behaved and so were all the parents." Kudos Freeman!

What about those toys?! The puppies in the photo above are part of GDB’s Litter Raiser Program, where they spend the first several weeks of their lives in the homes of volunteer breeding stock custodians. The toys shown in the photo are GDB-approved, with supervision, for puppies of that age involved in the Litter Raiser program.
